FAQ

You Asked, We Answered

Where are The Sailing Nomads, like right now?

You can track us at any time, just by heading over to the Route page.

How did this adventure begin?

If you’re knew to The Sailing Nomads, why not head over to The Start for the full story of when the craziness began. If you’d prefer just kicking back with a cold one, head to the Sailing Videos section. After all, The Sailing Nomads started as nothing more than some home movies for our mum’s, friends and family!

What kind of sailing boat is Caladh?

Caladh is a 34 foot Victoria, built in 1990, Southampton, UK and the love of our life! Designed for Victoria Marine by American Chuck Paine, whose cruising boats are always geared towards genuine blue-water cruising. The Victoria 34 has a longish shallow fin keel and a strong skeg-hung rudder. The boats were built to Lloyds specs, with solid GRP hulls and balsa-cored decks. For the full tour, check out the Boat page.

How do you deal with rubbish on board?

To reduce rubbish there are a few things we do. First of all, we try to remove all packaging BEFORE anything comes on board and use recycling points to dispose of cardboard, paper and plastic etc. This reduces the size of our provisions, but also any bugs who might like to try and live on the packaging! We have a lot of reusable containers, for things like flour, sugar, pasta and tea. A lot of food waste goes overboard when we’re at sea, or if we’re at anchor we save it and dispose of it later. Ditto with cans, plastic and other packaging, we clean it, crush it as small as possible and save it for our next port.

Who is the crew, and how can I join?

Kath and T are the regular Sailing Nomads crew! You can read more about our backgrounds and quirks on the Crew page. Very occasionally we look for additional folk to join us. It’s a dimension of the adventure we hadn’t imagined, but we’ve had the pleasure to sail with over 10 other people already. These people have been friends and family, but sometimes it’s cool people we meet on the go. It really depends on our plans for the season and if people can intercept us easily, which isn’t logistically the case all the time! If we are looking, then we will run a contest with our wonderful Patreon supporters, to begin with. you can check here for more details. We also post on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube so be sure to Subscribe as that’s the best way to know when we’re looking for new crew!
